Day 6 of Project 365

Green Huntsman Spider ( Gnathopalystes sp.)

This image of a cute looking Green Huntsman Spider is lying in my archive for very long time (almost an year old) and this project has given me the chance to dig into my hard drive and find images to edit and post. Slowly I am realizing that with projects like these one can edit the backlog and get on with writing the blog on a regular basis.

Huntsman Spiders, member of the family Sparassidae (formerly Heteropodidae), are known by this name because of their speed and mode of hunting. They also are called giant crab spiders because of their size and appearance. Larger species sometimes are referred to as wood spiders, because of their preference for woody places (forests, mine shafts, woodpiles, wooden shacks).

As adults, huntsman spiders do not build webs, but hunt and forage for food: their diet consists primarily of insects and other invertebrates, and occasionally small skinks and geckos. They live in the crevices of tree barks among other places.
